Battles van Isabelle Tollenaere bekroond met Fipresci-prijs op IFFR
Isabelle Tollenaere heeft op het IFFR de Fipresci-prijs gewonnen met haar filmische essay Battles. Daarin brengt de 30-jarige Vlaamse debutante op vier plaatsen in Europa (België, Albanië, Letland en Rusland) de sporen in beeld die (recente) conflicten hebben nagelaten in het landschap en bij de bevolking. Tollenaere liet na afloop van de prijsuitreiking in de Doelen weten ‘keiblij’ te zijn met de prijs van de internationale federatie van filmcritici. De jury bestond uit de Argentijn Roger Koza (voorzitter; links op de foto van Felix Kalkman), de Duitse Caroline Weidner, de Poolse Anita Piotrowska, de Australische Tara Judah en ikzelf.
Het jury-statement: “Battles is a unique visual essay that blends elements of fiction with a more traditionally structural documentary style. Each chapter builds upon the last without being prescriptive. The ambiguity, universality and performative elements lend the film a powerful, lasting affect. Tollenaere’s original examination of the traces of war and persistence of the past create a striking imaginary landscape. With its piercing sound design and impressive cinematography, the film offers a fresh perspective on the naturalisation of the culture of war. A strong debut, Tollenaere’s well-crafted mise-en-scene displays a clear talent for cinematic language and she definitely has a bright future.”
